Matt Hughes, who held the UFC’s welterweight belt twice between 2001 and 2006, is awake and responsive, according to his longtime manager, a day after Hughes’s truck was hit by a train.
“His eyes are closed, but he is awake today and squeezing hands,” Monte Cox told MMA Junkie on Saturday. Cox said he has been in direct contact with Hughes’s brother, who has been at his bedside at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Ill., since the accident occurred midmorning on Friday.
